Frequently Asked Questions

What are YTONG's incredients?

The main raw materials are quartz sand, Portland cement, lime and water. For manufacturing the final product, the material is put in autoclaves with approximately 190oC and about 12 bar pressure.

During this procedure the essential, for YTONG Blocks, spherical, closed air pores are created. YTONG is a so-called “isotropic” building material, with the same characteristics in all directions.

What is the life-cycle of YTONG?

YTONG is an inorganic mineral product (porobeton), which does not get disintegrated, is not susceptible to external influences and has a very long time, as well as other types of concrete. The oldest buildings, built with YTONG Blocks, in Sweden last for 80 years already. In Germany there have been conducted thorough researches regarding the ageing of YTONG Blocks. The material has been studied in different buildings. The only change that should be noted is associated with mild surface corrosion due to CO2 emmissions. Overall results show that the material does not age, since it is not observed that significant changes take place against the characteristics of the product.

Is YTONG radioactive?

YTONG is produced entirely from natural raw materials (quartz sand, lime, cement and water) and has a low natural radioactivity, which is ten times lower than the permitted value and 3,5 times lower than the value of which has a brick. YTONG Block is a natural construction material and is delivered with the CE Certification. You can always visit our downloads section and get some useful datasheets, like the Technical Safety Datasheet and other certificates.

Do we need a specialised application team?

Yes. Although YTONG Blocks are easy to build, the application procedure is not the same with the bricks. Therefore, we offer you free on-site training in order to build YTONG Blocks properly and gain all the advantages offered. On top of that we organise seminars throughout Greece and of course at our Central Offices in Athens for application teams and designers.

Do we need to apply a special adhesive?

YES! YTONG and THRAKON are the only acceptable manufacturers of adhesive for using with YTONG Blocks. YTONG offers two adhesives KLW130 (white) and KLG131 (grey), while THRAKON offers PAW140 (white colour).

Is there any risk of cracking?

Most masonry materials have good resistance to compression and low tensile strength. Some cracks may appear if the constraints limits of traction or compression are exceeded. Therefore, a building built with YTONG Blocks has less risk of cracking because the constraints limits are higher. The building must be studied so that there limits are never exceeded. This means that support beams should be placed where needed. We must also ensure that there are no constraints for traction, which for example can be caused by differential settlement foundations. In order to “arm themselves” against this, we will place YTONG's U-Form Blocks or alternatively Reinforced Steel mesh (catnic, Murfor). There reinforcements placed in the joints increase resistance to compression and tensile strength. They therefore play the role of an “insurance” effords against accindental damage.

How much reinforcement do I have to use for a load-bearing structure?

In accordance with new Antiearthquake Regulations for Greece regarding load-bearing structures, reinforcement is required on the corners and around the openings unless otherwise specified by an engineer. A static analysis always has to be made regarding reinforcement for both load-bearing and non-load bearing structures.

What are the recommended sizes for internal and external plastering?

The components made of aerated concrete products should always have a surface treatment. The reasons for this are, in essence, the components against the ingress of moisture to protect the attack by aggressive environmental influences and to prevent the mechanical resistance.
There are various products available. The flat surfaces of all the walls made of aerated concrete products allow thin layers of plaster to be used. With an exterior plaster thickness of about 18 mm and 15mm for internal plaster, the thermal insulation is impoved, while you achieve great economy, by minimising plastering thicknesses.

Can I leave YTONG masonry without plaster?

No! Plaster protects our masonry, improving on the same time the thermal insulation of the building. Preferred method of plastering should be recommended by YTONG regarding the product that should be used. Before applying spray plaster the applicator should do the necessary cleaning of dust from the walls and apply the YTONG Primer, making sure with this way about the good results of the final surface. THRAKON are the best possible combination when using YTONG Blocks since they are made with quartz sand and have great resistance to weather conditions.

I want to paint walls without plastering them. What do you suggest me?

YTONG does not recommend skipping the plastering stage for any reason. A painting exterior masonry on a concrete cell is possible, but there is no guarantee of sealing the rain swing. This is why most paintings show microcracks at the joints between the blocks and it is through these microcracks that water can penetrate. These products are deteriorating under the effects of UV light and must be renewed very often. This is the reason why YTONG walls must be plastered in any case.

How do we put cupboards, a/c untis, etc?

YTONG is there for you. You can visit our website or call us in order to send you the appropriate list, including the type of anchor you should use depending on the weight we need each anchor to hold and of course the application (air condition units, cupboards, doors, windows frames).

Does the building with YTONG need your tools and how can they be obtained?

YTONG tools are necessary for faster, easier work and more accurate results, accordingly with the terms of construction with YTONG Blocks. For the procurement of our tools you only need to contact one of our dealers, or send us an e-mail. We can find the closest distributor to your work.

How do we apply hydraulics and electrics?

There are specific tools for each different application. Using these tools you work faster, with less efford and more importantly without causing problems (e.g. cracks) to an YTONG wall. Our tools available are reviewed on our website and can be bought from one of our distributors. Chases are routed or sawn in the YTONG for the lines and then patched with repair mortar or polyurethane foam.

Why shoot a wall made with YTONG Blocks?

During the construction of an YTONG wall, and after the completion of it at the electrical cabling and hydraulics, materials do not shoot. Applicators should certainly respect the instructions for proper treatment and installation. YTONG provides the whole range of tools exactly because we want to make your work easier and faster. The wall with YTONG Blocks can be puncured only if the irregular wall (not respectiong the terms of construction of an YTONG System), in the case of bad application.

Does YTONG absorb moisture?

YTONG Blocks, like any other building material, absorbs moisture from the air. Water penetrating the material though, gets only up to a depth of 3,5 cm in depth. With moisture content into an YTONG Block, the colour changes, but that does not mean that the quality changes. Colour is not an indicator of quality. When high humidity invades into an YTONG Block, it accumulates and spreads evenly in YTONG materials. When moisture reduces, YTONG begins broadcasting the accumulated moisture back into the atmosphere. So, YTONG regulates humidity completely naturally and creates a pleasant and healthy climate in the region. The presence of water or moisture in the YTONG material, as well as low temperature, does not affect its quality and durability. YTONG structural elements belonging to the group of materials are cold resistant and therefore no damage occurs during winter weather conditions. In other words, no matter the temperature is, it does not change the basic properties of YTONG building materials.

Why is AAC a good thermal Insulator?

Combining AAC's R Value with 100% wall coverage thermal mass inertia and low air infiltration results in a wall system that has proven to reduce energy in most applications.

How and why is YTONG considered a Green Building Component?

Autoclaved aerated concrete (AAC) is well known as an environmentally friendly construction material. The energy consumed in the production process is only a fraction compared to the production of other materials. The manufacturing process emits no pollutants and creates no by-products or toxic waste products.
An YTONG Block is manufactured from common and abundant natural raw materials. The finished product is twice the volume of the raw materials used, making it extremely resource-efficient and environmentally friendly.

Is YTONG an ecological and sustainable building material?

The environmental impact measures the impact of a building material during its entire life-cycle, starting at the reduction of commodity production, processing, use and ultimate disposal. YTONG achieves the minimisation of the environmental impact from the raw materials used up to the minimisation of CO2 emmissions. Natural resources: The main precursors for the production of YTONG are quartz sand, lime, cement and water. These raw materials are virtually inexhaustible. The consumption is very low: From 1 m3 commodity 5 m3 of YTONG are produced.

Manufacturing: YTONG is in a production cycle with very little energy needed.

Processing: The processing is not dangerous for humans and nature.

Transport: Transport costs are due to the low weight comparatively low.

Usage: YTONG reduces outstanding CO2 emissions by low heating demand. For the inhabitants this results in heating costs savings in long-term.

What kind of sound inslulation is provided by an YTONG wall?

Sound insulation is primarily dependent on the density of materials. As a porous structure and closed pore in YTONG Block comes to the significant attenuation of sound. This is a consequence of the fact that an YTONG Block has bigger sound insulation (for approximately 9dB) than any other material of the same density.

How much money do I save if I use YTONG Blocks?

Construction with YTONG Blocks with the final processing (building and plastering) saves at least 10-15%, when compared with the traditional way of building, depending on the type of the project. The exact value of the general savings is difficult to say because it depends on the project, climatic conditions onsite, team's quality of application (surface composition), and more importantly how “Green” we want our house.

Where do YTONG Blocks are most usually been used?

YTONG Blocks have been used worldwide in the following applications:

  • Hospitality; hotels, motels and restaurants
  • Retail and warehouses
  • Industrial
  • Office Buildings
  • Education
  • Medical, clinics and offices
  • Religious
